2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the complete text from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of the team. Following several months of conversations, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s management and experience in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the recent years producing and leading some of the most popular titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
David
Background of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, risks, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can expect additional details as production continues.
